Doc Martin Shares His LA Rituals

SPREAD THE WORD ON SOCIALS

Long before Los Angeles became a global nightlife capital, Doc Martin was already shaping the language of American underground dance music.

Emerging from San Francisco’s late-80s house and techno explosion, Martin Mendoza built his reputation not on hype but on depth, patience, and a refusal to be boxed into a single sound. His sets moved fluidly between house, techno, soul, and funk, guided by intuition rather than trends. By the early 1990s, his relocation to Los Angeles placed him at the centre of a rapidly evolving scene, where warehouses, desert parties, and early clubs became laboratories for a distinctly West Coast interpretation of dance music culture.

Across the following decades, Doc Martin became a reference point rather than a headline chaser. Founding Sublevel in the late 1990s, he established one of the most enduring platforms in US underground house, using it as both a creative outlet and a community anchor. Sublevel was never about scale. It was about consistency, trust, and long-term vision. His global touring schedule mirrored that ethos, with extended sets and repeat invitations to clubs and festivals that valued musical narrative over spectacle. Fabric, DC10, Movement, and countless underground rooms across Europe and the Americas became spaces where his influence quietly compounded.

By 2025, that long arc is still unfolding. Rather than leaning into legacy status, Doc Martin remains active where it matters most: in the booth, on wax, and behind the scenes. Over the past year, he has continued releasing new material through Sublevel, favouring groove-led, stripped-back productions that reflect decades of refinement rather than nostalgia. These releases sit comfortably alongside his DJ work, reinforcing his belief that sound should evolve without abandoning its roots.

His presence throughout 2025 has also been defined by continuity. Regular Sublevel events and radio sessions have kept him in direct conversation with contemporary dance floors, while his DJ sets continue to stretch well beyond functional club programming into something closer to storytelling. There is no pivot toward trends, no reinvention theatre. Instead, there is clarity. A reaffirmation of why his name still carries weight across generations of dancers, DJs, and promoters.

That context matters when Doc Martin talks about Los Angeles. His relationship with the city is not touristic. It is lived-in, earned over decades of nights, mornings, and cultural shifts. The places he gravitates toward reflect the same values that have shaped his career: longevity, character, and substance beneath the surface. This travel feature is less about hotspots and more about perspective. Seen through Doc Martin’s lens, Los Angeles becomes not just a destination, but a continuum, one that mirrors his own path through dance music history.
